The Color of the Independent Games Festival

Posted on Thursday, January 22nd, 2009 at 4:13 pm

Just as I thought life couldn’t get any better, I found out that The Color of Doom is a student showcase winner in the Independent Games Festival.

I made the end credits music together with my friends in The Brown Pumas. The song is also used in the trailer.

All of us contributed to the lyrics.

You Have to Burn the Rope gets IGF nomination

Posted on Thursday, January 8th, 2009 at 12:43 am

As we approached the new year, the best of 2008 awards started to pop up. I was really happy that Gamasutra, IndieGames and RPS liked You Have to Burn the Rope (YHTBTR). The Gaming Club over at Slate’s gave the game some attention while Spike TV used my song “Now you’re a hero” at the end of their show The Next Great Game Gods. I celebrated when Jayisgames finally wrote a full post about the game and as the article by Stuart Horvath in the New York Daily News was published I was quite surprised. YHTBTR by the side of GTA IV, Fallout 3, Braid and the other great games was an honor beyond my wildest dreams.

To top it all of, YHTBTR is nominated for Innovation in the 2009 Independent Games festival. I really want to go to San Fransisco to attend the awards but I’m not sure I can. The tickets + expenses will surely amount to at least 1000 EUROS which is way over my budget. Oh well, you never know what might happen.

I read some comments about the nomination and realised that some people think YHTBTR don’t belong on the list. I can’t make you like the game and if you don’t, to be honest, I’m not going to lose sleep over it. But I want to make something clear which is obviously just a misunderstanding. People who think YHTBTR was something Kian and me threw together in a hurry need to think again. To get it in perspective, let me tell you about the text on the way to the boss. If you count the hours me and Kian talked about colors, placements, alternative ideas, testing it on people and so on, it amounts to at least ten. Do the math and you’ll understand how long it took to complete the full game.

Surprised?

An old saying fits well here:

Sometimes the simplest things are the hardest.

Make music

Posted on Monday, December 29th, 2008 at 4:03 am

Make music and let people worry about the rest. It’ll come to you.

I was going to put that on my wall but I changed my mind. Here it is for all to see. Remind me if I forget would you kindly?

The next great gametrailer gods

Posted on Sunday, December 14th, 2008 at 12:17 am

Henrik Edlund from Swedish Game Awards was kind enough to inform me that The Next Great Game Gods can be seen in full at Gametrailers.com. Part 4 uses my song at 4:47.

The Next Great Game Gods

Posted on Friday, December 12th, 2008 at 4:53 pm

Spike TV will be airing a show tonight about the rising stars of gaming. Towards the end they’re going to play Now you’re a hero.  Read more in GameDaily.

If Spike TV is not available to you, download the TVU player. To make it complicated they have a three hour delay. This is what I’ve come up to. Correct me if I’m wrong.

  1. The Next Game Gods will be airing at Spike TV at 00:30 12/12 (which is technically 13/12) EST.
  2. That means that if Sweden (where I’m from) would air it live with no delay we could see it at 06:30 in the morning at 13/12.
  3. Since the TVU player is transmitting with a three hour delay you’ll have to add that. That means that here in Sweden I could watch the show at 9:30 saturday morning.

God damn. I’m a genius! I deserve to be on that show!

Battlezone now released

Posted on Tuesday, December 9th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

I’ve had a couple of e-mails requesting that I should release the song Battlezone. As an early christmas present it’s now downloadable for free. You can get it from the Reverbnation widget at the top of this site.

It’s released as Creative Commons which means you can use it for free if you don’t make any money and credit me properly.

Guitar by The Incredible Haze.

Enjoy!

Swedish Game Awards soundlogo

The good people over at Swedish Game Awards asked me to make a jingle/soundlogo for their videos. Finally it’s done. Check it out here where it’s played before Kians speach about the process that led to You Have to Burn the Rope. Unfortunately only in swedish.

The Color of the Brown Pumas

Posted on Monday, June 30th, 2008 at 1:19 am

A few months ago I got a request to make a credits song for a student project at the Guildhall. Their graduation project is a Half-Life 2 mod called “Color of Doom”. This time I got help from my brothers in The Brown Pumas. I chose to act as producer and let Rafael and The Incredible Haze shine. My ego took a punch but I’ll survive ;)

Dowload the song direct from Reverbnation or use the widget above to get it.

The success of friends

Posted on Monday, May 26th, 2008 at 10:39 am

When I worked as a salesman in New Zealand, my boss used to stress how important it was to be surrounded by successful people. Luckily I have close friends who are just that. I usually get along best with creative minds and during the recent days, the brilliance of these minds have been awarded.

Fabian Lenhard

The other day Fabian told me that he hated working with me because I was too straight up. “If you think it’s crap you’ll say it’s crap”. I think that’s the only way to go. That smile in your face and knife in the back is just not my style. Ask me about your work and I’m going to be honest. If you just want a pat on the back don’t ask me, I won’t give it to you unless you truly deserv it.

A few weeks ago Fabian played me a new song he’d been working on. I loved it at first listen. When it was close to the end he invited me to help with the mixing. We sat for many hours tweaking the song and I added some ideas which worked really well.

There’s a swedish magazine called Studio. They have a forum which sends out a newsletter every second week. The editorial staff chose Fabian’s song as one of the top 5. “Brilliant song that resembles Queen of the Stone Age and other Californian 90s bands.” If you haven’t thrown yourself at Google to find his song yet I recommend you check out Fabian at Reverbnation. Download “Through the Night” and enjoy!

Kian Bashiri

If you haven’t heard of You Have to Burn the Rope already you’ve probably been locked in a cave somewhere. If you think Kian is a one-hit-wonder, think again. This guy’s just started. His latest game Swarm won the Mobile Games with Netbeans 6.0 & Java ME section at the Swedish Game Awards 2008.

The event starts at 03:00 and they announce Kian as a winner at 04:30:

Since I’m also a good friend of mine I have to promote some events of myself. The widget I’m using from Reverbnation has now been shown 100.000 times. That has to be worth something!

Another thing that happened was that the instrumental of Now you’re a hero made the frontpage of Newgrounds Audio Portal.
